Getting over Jet Lag and getting back on track...

It has been hard to stay awake, but I am healthy and physically fit. So Jet lag doesn't bother me too much...I m almost back on this side of the globe's schedule.

Here is a article by Cathy Wong

5 Jet Lag RemediesNatural Remedies to Avoid Jet LagBy Cathy Wong, About.com GuideUpdated September 22, 2011About.com Health's Disease and Condition content is reviewed by our Medical Review BoardWhether you're flying to Europe for a much-needed vacation, across the country to visit family or friends, or just travel a lot for business, who wants to waste their trip adjusting to a new time zone?

Jet lag occurs after air travel across several time zones. It's caused by the body's circadian rhythms being out of sync with the local destination time.

Symptoms of jet lag are temporary and include insomnia, irritability, indigestion, and disorientation in the days following air travel.

How long does jet lag normally last? Count on about one day to adjust to each time zone crossed. For example, a flight from New York to London crosses 5 time zones, so it would take roughly 5 days to recover.

Traveling eastward, such as from the United States to Europe or from Europe to Asia, generally causes more severe jet lag than traveling westward.

Are there any jet lag remedies that can help avoid or minimize jet lag? Here's a rundown of some promising remedies that may help to prevent and diminish jet lag symptoms.

1) MelatoninMelatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. One of melatonin's key jobs is controlling the body's circadian rhythm--our internal clock that plays an important role in when we fall asleep and when we wake up.

Melatonin release is tied to the amount of light there is. When it gets dark at night and we turn out the lights, melatonin release is stimulated. Light suppresses melatonin release. When we cross time zones and are suddenly exposed to excessive light when it's normally our bedtime (even a three-hour time difference can do it), our melatonin cycles are disrupted and we experience jet lag until our circadian rhythms adjust to the new environment.

Melatonin supplements are thought to help the body quickly adjust to the new surroundings. Although it is found in 30 mg pills, most practitioners agree that the lowest dose possible should be used and it should only be taken for a short time. There have no long-term studies on the safety of melatonin. Higher doses may cause side effects such as vivid dreams and nightmares. Besides, a Rush University study found no difference between 0.5 mg and 3 mg melatonin.

For jet lag, practitioners generally suggest taking a 0.5 mg tablet of melatonin a night for three nights, one hour before a normal bedtime. Research suggests that taking it once a person has reached the travel destination is sufficient, and that starting melatonin supplements prior to or during air travel may actually slow the recovery of jet lag, energy, and alertness.
2) Adjusting Sleep and Wake TimeAnother strategy to avoid jet lag involves adjusting a person's bedtime and wake time to the destination time prior to traveling. It is generally started prior to travel and involves waking up and going to bed one hour progressively earlier/later (depending on which way you're traveling) each day for three days.

If traveling eastward, this means going to sleep one hour earlier than normal on day one and waking up one hour earlier. On day two, bedtime would be two hours earlier and wake time would be two hours later. On the third day, bedtime would be three hours earlier and wake time would be three hours earlier.

If traveling westward, bedtime would be one hour later than normal and wake time would be one hour later than normal and it would also increase progressively each day.

Additional Tips
  • If it's not possible to follow this gradual schedule, some readers suggest pre-adjusting to the new time zone a day in advance by setting your watch to your destination time the day before you travel and preconditioning yourself to the new time. If it is six hours later at your travel destination, this means waking up six hours earlier the day you travel and then going to sleep when it is nighttime at your destination.
  • If you simply must nap, seasoned travelers suggest limiting naps to no more than an hour
3) HomeopathyHomeopathic remedies are small vials of tiny pellets. They are made from minute dosages of naturally occurring substances which, in much larger doses, would produce the same symptoms in healthy people similar to those of the condition or disease.

Homeopathic remedies are diluted to the point that they are no longer detectable, so they are not believed to be toxic or affect the way other medications are metabolized.

The most popular homeopathic remedy for Jet Lag is a product called No Jet Lag. It is available in health foods stores and some grocery stores, drug stores, and airport convenience stores. Some readers swear by it.

No Jet Lag contains the homeopathic remedies arnica montana (Leopard's bane), bellis perennis (Daisy), Chamomilla (Wild chamomile), Ipecacuanha (Ipecac), and Lycopodium (Clubmoss). Remember that homeopathic remedies are specially prepared and that regular, non-homeopathic doses of these substances can be toxic if taken internally.

Homeopaths say that No Jet Lag will only work if jet lag symptoms match the profiles of these remedies. Other jet lag remedies, which can be purchased individually in health food stores and some drug stores, may be a closer match. For example, Cocculus indicus is used for people who say they are "too tired to sleep". They may feel weak, dizzy, irritable, and have trouble concentrating.

Although the profiles are quite extensive, here are some key point for each No Jet Lag homeopathic ingredient:
  • Arnica - sleeplessness and restlessness when over-tired
  • Bellis perennis - waking mid-sleep and sleep interruptions
  • Chamomilla - emotional and mental stress, sleeplessness, impatience, intolerance and disorientation
  • Ipecacuanha - intense and constant nausea
  • Lycopodium - anxiety, anticipatory fears, apprehension, inability to adapt to new surroundings, digestive problems, especially bloating and gas
For all homeopathic remedies, follow the instructions on the vial or consult a homeopath for specific instructions.

4) ValerianValerian is a herb used as a natural sleep aid. For jet lag, it is used to help adjust to new time zones by helping people fall asleep at their desired time. Unlike other sleep aids, valerian is not believed to be addictive or cause grogginess the next morning.
5) DietWhen it comes to air travel, there are some well-known diet maxims: avoid excess alcohol or caffeine, drink plenty of water, and eat light meals.

But Dr. Charles F. Ehret, a scientist at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, says that it's possible to use diet to help reset your body's clock to a new time zone. Called the "Argonne diet" or the "anti-jet lag diet", the diet was developed after research with experimental animals and humans.

Basically, the diet alternates feast and fast days and ends with a high-protein breakfast:

Begin three days prior to departure.

Day 1: Feast day
Eat predominantly high-protein foods (e.g. meat, fish, chicken, cheese, eggs, tofu) for breakfast and lunch. The theory is that these foods stimulate the body's production of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine (substances called catecholamines) which help the body maintain an alert, awake state.

Dinner should be carbohydrates (e.g. cereal grains, wheat, rice, oats, potatoes, fruit, peas, pasta , bread, dried fruit) with no high-protein foods. Carbohydrate-rich foods are believed to stimulate the body to produce melatonin.

Coffee, tea, and caffeinated sodas are only permitted between 3 and 5 pm during the first three days, a time of day when caffeine is not thought to affect circadian rhythms.

Day 2: Fast day
Only light meals such as salads and thin soups are recommended. These so-called "fast" days are thought to deplete the liver's store of glycogen (a muscle fuel) to prepare the body to reset its clock.

Day 3: Feast day
Follow the same guidelines as day 1.

Day 4 (departure day): Fast day
Follow the modified fast and get as much sleep as you can until it is breakfast time at your destination. If traveling westward, caffeine is permitted in the morning of the departure, and if traveling eastward, caffeine is permitted between 6 and 11 pm.

When your watch indicates that it is breakfast time at your destination, have a protein-heavy breakfast without coffee, turn on the overhead reading light and then stay as active as you can afterwards. If you are traveling from New York to Paris and departed at 7:00 pm, this means having breakfast at 2:00 am New York time (8:00 am Paris time). The flight attendant may agree to save your dinner until that time or you can pack food such as protein bars with you.

Eat the rest of the meals according to normal mealtimes at your destination.

Does this diet work? The anti-jet lag diet website (which charges for personalized plans) say that this anti-jet lag diet has help thousands of people effectively. There was one study in the journal Military Medicine that found decreased jet lag in National Guard personnel who followed the diet.

Drawbacks of the diet are that people may find the diet too difficult and there may be possible caffeine withdrawal.

If considering this diet, be sure to discuss it with your doctor first because it is not suitable for everyone, such as people with diabetes or eating disorders.

Having a fever? Here's a couple of Natural cures for you..,JoJo's latest Blog

A fever can devastate you. If it goes unchecked it can casue permananent brain damage. It may even cause death.

The usual cures include over the counter chemical drugs.  These are hit and miss, and are very rarely effective with side effects.

Soooo... here are some natural cures that work very effectively

1)  Egg White Soak

take two rags, soak them in egg whites then place the rags on the soles of the feet. Socks on are ok.   This remedy usually has a very fast response.

By far the best method to lower a high temperature within MINUTES! When I was about 4 or 5 years old, I had acquired a fever so high that I started to hallucinate. My mother was in a panic, she feared brain damage if something didn't lower the fever and FAST. My grandma told her about an old-wives' remedy.Soak 2 cloths or hankerchiefs in egg whites and put on the soles of the feet (cover with socks). The egg whites instantaneously start to draw the temperature DOWN from the brain (where it is dangerous) to the feet (where it can do no damage). After that incident my mom used this method successfully every time I had high temp. If no eggs are on hand, chopped onion or chopped potato can be applied to feet instead, although egg whites are the fastest method. The egg whites are also a miracle cure for minor and more severe burns. Soak or coat affected area in egg white. While the egg white is still wet you will feel no pain from the burn. As soon as it dries up the pain comes back so reapplication is necessary. This also prevents scarring from the burn.

Quick note: the egg whites are useless once they dry up, which can be rather quickly if the temp is high. The feet get very hot and the egg whites can literally COOK! You must check and REAPPLY as many times as necessary until the temp is back to normal. Don't give up after one application, it will work but the egg whites must be WET. My mom usually reapplied once or twice but you can keep going in case of a stubborn fever

2)  Apple Cider Vinegar, Honey and Water

Here is what Dixie from NY contributed to us

Dixie from NYC: "Hi, I found this site and am amazed by what I am reading. My mother always told a story of how in the thirties, my uncle was a little boy and desperately ill. The doctors could not figure out what was wrong or how to help him and finally told my grandparents to prepare for the worst. Apparently all he kept asking for was vinegar (my mom never specified if it was ACV) and when things looked really bleak, they decided to let him have it since he never stopped asking for it and since there was no real reason to deny him, however bizarre it seemed to give it to him. He apparently struggled to drink it, but got through a whole bottle in a few hours despite his weakness. The fever suddenly broke and he fully recovered, and to this day no one in my family really understood how. Now I'm getting a clue as to why! So, I thought I would try the honey/water/AVC drink three times a day- today is day 5 and while I didn't see any real weight loss until today, today my jeans are suddenly loose! Also been using it as a toner and guess what! No trip to the dermo like I planned because my pores are getting smaller on their own! Depression doing a lot better too - though the jury is still out on that since today I was a bit down after a few up days - will check back in and let everyone know- but WOW! I'm amazed! My little uncle was really on to something, clearly!"

3) Zinc and Aspirin

If you feel the need where you must do Aspirin, then get some zinc and crush it, drink with water. The combination of Zinc and aspirin will work much better than aspirin alone. This is a VERY good cure for Swine Flue.

4)Baking Soda and Lard

You rub it on their stomach, feet and back and add the baking soda and rub it in and it reduces the fever instantly

5) Baking Soda Bath

You can use a small bowl and bath [face-head], neck, chest, & back or submerge body in tub. If using a small bowl, use 2 parts baking soda to 1 part (cool water-the colder it can be, the better). BE CAREFUL & LIGHTLY APPLY, AS NOT TO SHOCK THE PERSON. Do not rinse and apply often, fever should go down fairly fast. Once person is feeling better, bath to wash off baking soda. If submerging bath, tub does not have to be full. 2-1 parts, same as above. Just enough water to get wet good, (have water as cool as can be stood). Only stay in tub long enough, to soak or wet down entire body,(just a couple minutes). Do not rinse off, wait til fever has dropped.

6) Chinese Egg White Massage

Hard boil the egg and remove the egg yolk. Put the hard boiled egg white including the shell in a handkerchief. Twist the content into a ball and massage body from head to toe. Brings the temp down instantaneously. My Grandma would also insert a silver ring in the egg white content when massaging. Silver would change to different colours when rubbed on different patients. This was used to diagnose the cause of the fever and then she would use (ying/yang) herbal treatment for the illness.

7) Cool water

last  but not least... a nice cool bath

Fever is very dangerous for the children, and should be handled quickly.

A fever means that your body is having a war inside. Something is there that your body is trying to kill with heat.  If  your body is not winning this war, then emergency western medicine is not out of order for temp relief.

Here is what one of our customers wrote

Maud from Cummings Ga   "My 13 month old was suffering from Fever/cold and had been up and down all night so at around 3.00am in the morning I found your website. Looked up fever and read about using Egg Whites on the feet. My husband was skeptical but our sons temp was rising and very distressed. I soaked paper towels with the egg whites, put his feet into zip lock bags then his sock over the bags. A bit of crying at the beginning but within 30 minutes the red flush had gone from his checks and he was not burning all over. I was unsure how long to leave it on so kept them on for a few hours just for good measure. His body temperature returned to normal and cooled enough to put his clothes back on and sleep for the rest of the night. Egg Whites worked wonders for my child and have passed on your website to others."

Blueberries are a SUPER Food!!! JoJo's latest blog

Here is some good information about Blueberries....

Now here is a SuperFood that you can take to the bank! Native to the North American landscape, blueberries are truly an All-American food. For many years nutritionists and researchers ignored the tiny blueberry because of its relatively low vitamin C content. However, what these people did not know was that the healthful benefits of blueberries stem mainly from their incredibly high levels of antioxidant phytonutrients.

Phytonutrients are non-vitamin, non-mineral components of food that have significant healthful benefits. There are literally thousands of different types of phytonutrients, and each phytonutrient is unique in both its physical characteristics and its function. Research has shown that phytonutrients help the body cells communicate with each other more efficiently, prevent mutations at the cellular level, prevent the proliferation of cancer cells, and there is still much more that we are learning about the powers of phytonutrients everyday. Blueberries are so rich in phytonutrients that even though they are not filled with the antioxidant vitamins C and E, the still provide as much antioxidant protection to the body as 1,733 IU of vitamin E and more than 1200 milligrams of vitamin C.

It is recommended that 1 to 2 cups of blueberries should be consumed daily to obtain the full health benefits of this amazing fruit.

The Miracle of Ginger .. JoJo's latest blog

They say ginger is plant that came directly from the Garden of Eden. Ginger was widely used by the Roman Empire and it was a very expensive spice. One pound of ginger cost the same money as a whole sheep.   Ginger was almost lost in history when the Roman Empire fell. Then it become popular again when Europe re discovered it.  Ginger has influenced the history of mankind since the ancient days of China.  Wars were waged and entire dynasties rose and fell with the objective of seizing it. The trade of such spices were the root of the world's economy for centuries.

People all over the world have turned to ginger for the cure of many ailments for centuries. In many different studies, Ginger has been been highly effective as a preventative and even a cure for illnesses such as Heart disease, Cancer, Arthritis and many other illness.

Ginger helps make your blood thin so that you don't get blood clots which will lead to heart attacks.  It is a long process that makes these clots, and ginger interrupts that process.  Ginger also inhibits the clumping together of platelets. It also strengthens the heart h
by giving the heart more energy so that it can pump more calcium to the heart cells. This is very important for the health of the heart.

Ginger has also been found to decrease tumors in skin.  When ginger was mixed with water ad directly applied to cancer cells, the cancer cells would die by eating themselves. And they also self destructed themselves. These studies were done on Ovarian Cancer cells.

The main ingredient in Ginger root is called Gingerol. It is what gives ginger its very distinctive taste.  Gingerol has been known to kill Leukemia cells, and it is also a preventative to colon cancer cells. Also ginger help you survive lethal chemo therapy radiation, and also acts as a blood thinner.

Here is a list of  just some of the medicinal properties ginger has been known to have throughout history.

Anti Nausea

Anti Clotting Agent

Anti Spasmodic

Anti Fungal

Anti Inflammatory

Antiseptic

Anti Bacterial

Anti Viral

Antitussive

Analgesic

Circulatory Stimulant

Carminative

Expectorant

Hypotensive

Increases Blood flow

Promotes sweating

Relaxes Peripheral blood vessels

Ginger is full of  Phytochemicals (healing agents in plants)

Ginger speed up body heat, it speeds up the blood circulation and sweating. Sweating is important. It is the way that the body cools itself  from overheating, but more importantly, the body releases toxins from the body.

Are you having arthritis aches and pains?  Take a nice hot bath with ginger slices in the bathtub.

Ginger has been proven over and over again, study after study that proves the positive medicinal effects.  It is much more effective then aspirin in preventing heart attacks, with NO side effects.

Modern day research is now begining to know what we've known in China for thousand of years.

The pharmaceutics industry spend millions of dollars trying to prevent information about the medicianl effects of Ginger. But the truth is, Nature gives us Ginger. Nature will always be better than anything man-made.  Ginger is one of the most powerful weapons against illness that has ever been discovered.

Include ginger in your daily diet, and you can live a long healthy life.

Broccoli is a wonder food... here's why from JoJo

Here is an article written by my good friend about the miracle of Brocoli

10 Top Reasons You Need Broccoli In Your Diet
by MARK MCMANUS

Broccoli rules!Want to get healthy or even lose weight? Broccoli needs to be included in your diet. Here’s 10 reasons why broccoli is great!

1 Broccoli is the king of low carb vegetables – 1.1 grams of carbohydrate per 100g! (after fiber subtracted) Sometimes I fill my plate up with broccoli and drench it in melted butter or cheese.

2 A chemical in vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage can boost DNA repair in cellsand may stop them becoming cancerous

3 Eating steamed broccoli reduces the risk of a heart attack by boosting the body’s ability to fight off cell damage, researchers have found.

4 Did you know broccoli contains more vitamin C than an orange? (ounce for ounce) Vitamin C is great for your hair, skin, teeth, fighting infections and keeping red blood cells healthy

.5 Did you know broccoli contains as much calcium as a glass of milk? (ounce for ounce) Calcium helps to keep you heart beating regularly and promotes sleep.

6 Broccoli is also a good source of folate . Folate is necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells.

7 Broccoli is also a good source of iron. Iron is an essential component of haemoglobin and, therefore, iron is required for normal blood formation and oxygen transport around the body.

8 Broccoli is also a great source of fiber.

9 Broccoli is also a good source of potassium. Potassium plays an important role in the physical fluid system of humans and it assists nerve functions.

10 Broccoli is also a good source of vitamin K. Vitamin K is known to be needed to coagulate blood and to maintain proper bone density. It also plays a key role in proper development of the fetus.

If you’re gonna eat low-carb, broccoli should be a regular feature in your diet. Whether you’re focused on gaining muscle or losing fat, broccoli will greatly assist you in your goal.Your buddy,Mark McManus
