What is Aromatherapy Massage? Aromatherapy massage is massage therapy where highly concentrated plant oils, called essential oils, are added to the massage oil or lotion. How does aromatherapy massage work? When you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the brain where they affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system. Each essential oil has different healing properties. For example, some calm while others energize.
Here are some widely used essential oils and their properties: - Calming – chamomile, lavender, geranium
- Uplifting – ylang ylang, clary sage, rose, neroli
Energizing – rosemary Cleansing – rosemary Decongesting – eucalyptus, pine, tea tree
Why do people get aromatherapy massage?
Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to providing relief from emotional stress and its resulting conditions. These can include, but are not limited to: - Insomnia
Headache Digestive disorders Back pain - Muscular tension
- Post-partum blues
- Anxiety
What can I expect during an aromatherapy massage? One or more essential oils will be selected based on what you need, and are mixed in with the massage oil or lotion. The subtle aroma of the essential oils fill the air around you during the massage. After the massage, the massage therapist may suggest a blend that you can use at home in between massage treatments. Precautions Massage is not recommended for certain people: - If you have an infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds, the
- essential oils mike cause irritation.
Massage is not recommended immediately after surgery Massage is not recommended immediately after chemotherapy or - radiation, unless recommended by your doctor
Massage is not recommended if you are prone to blood clots. There is - a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check
- with your doctor before having a massage
Pregnant women should check with their doctor first if they are - considering getting a massage. Massage in pregnant women should be done
- by massage therapists who are certified in pregnancy massage.
Massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed skin, - unhealed wounds, tumors, abdominal hernia, or areas of recent
- fractures.
Additional Tips
There are a few things that you can do to help ensure the effectivness of your massage therapy. One, simple, and often overlooked step you can take is to avoid eating a heavy meal before the massage. You should avive for your massage therapy hungry, but you should not feel overly full, either. Also, if it's your first time at the clinic or spa, arrive at least 10 minutes early to complete the necessary forms. Otherwise, arrive 5 minutes early so you can have a few minutes to rest and relax before starting the massage.

Inadequate sleep is associated with a variety of chronic ailments including diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, among others. Most people need between eight and nine hours a night for optimum rejuvenation, and yet, most Americans get less than that, and are, therefore, sleep deprived. In my previous two blog posts on insomnia, I discussed various herbal sleep aids. Now, we will look at some other kinds of natural remedies that you might try. Melatonin Melatonin is the master hormone for regulating our sleep cycle. Melatonin levels in our bodies rise naturally just before we fall asleep and decline through the night, hitting a low point about two hours before we wake up. So it makes sense that melatonin supplementation can help us to fall asleep. Take 1 to 3 milligrams two to three hours before the desired sleep time. Melatonon is not going to knock you out like a sleeping pill willl, but it can help to make falling asleep easier. Melatonin is also a powerful antioxidant that enhances the reparative function of sleep. L-Theanine Taking 300 milligrams of the amino acid L-Theanine, can help to reduce tension and stress. L-Treanine can be found in most health food stores.
Light Therapy By exposing sleep-deprived people to specially designed full-spectrum lights (10,000 lux fluorescent bulbs) for 30 minutes in the early morning, scientists have helped them get to sleep earlier and stay asleep longer. One theory is that regular exposure to such light in the
morning triggers a more advantageous nighttime release of melatonin, the hormone that keeps your body clock on a regular schedule, ensuring that you feel sleepy in the evening and stay asleep through the night. Light therapy can work wonders for people who find it difficult to fall asleep before midnight and who are sluggish in the morning. There are several companies that sell light therapy lamps. I have not tried any of them, so I cannot recommend any specific one, but here are a few links that youo might want to research on your own: Dark Therapy
Light in the blue spectrum can disrupt circadian rhythms and keep you awake. Exposure to blue light late at night can wreak havoc with your body clock. Blue light is emitted by computers, routers, televisions, cable boxes, and even some digital clocks. Keep your room pitch-dark at night, and cover all digital clock, DVD player readouts, and other such displays that emit blue light.
Massage Being that own and operate several theraputic massage salons, you knew that I would get around to this one eventually. Various types of massage can help to end a stubborn bout of insomnia by relaxing the muscles and releasing pent up energy in the body. Massage aimed at
promoting a return to a healthy sleep pattern can be effective regardless of the time of day it is received, but many people find that an evening massage is the most effective. Types of Massage While any type of massage might be effective, those seeking a restroation of natural sleep patterns usually rely on either Swedish massage or on traditional Asian massage.
Swedish massage is light, soothing, and relaxing. If insomnia is caused by mild tension, Swedish massage can be very effective. Swedish masage also helps to promote flexibility. If sore muscles or muscular stiffness are interfering with sleep, Swedish massage can be of great benefit. Traditional Asian massage goes deeper than Swedish massage. For some, it can be a bit uncomfortable at first as the knots and blockages are addressed. However, in the end, if applied expertly, traditional Asian massage techniques can release these energy blockages, and rebalance the entire body's energy flows resulting in deep relaxation, and a feeling of healh and wholeness that allows sleep to come more easily. While the idea of energies flowing through your body might lead one to think that this can only be invigorating, the truth is that pent up, non-moving energy makes us tense and restless. Relieving blockages and restoring natural internal energy flows through massage allows us to relax, and to regain our connection to our deepest self, and harmony with the rest of humanity. In this way, traditional Asian massage therapy can help us to let go of interpersonal tensions, and to once again find a feeling of wholeness, balance, and connectedness with the Universe. Now, that is restorative! Be sure to tell your massage therapist what you are trying to achieve to that she can apply the most effective techniques for your needs. Conclusion Well, that about covers it. I hope that somewhere within these three posts on getting a good night's sleep you have found some tips that you can use to get the rst you need. Remember, without adequate sleep, no natural healing can take place, so always make getting adequate sleep a top priority in your life.

Reflexology has been used in various forms for thousands of years –
in fact there is evidence in hieroglyphics in the pyramids of foot
massage and foot treatments. However the modern day version came about
because of a French physiotherapist called Eunice Ingham in the 1900's.
Ms Ingham pioneered Reflexology as we know and love it today.Foot Reflexology
is based on the ancient energy meridians that acupuncture identifies
and uses. The energy lines run from head to toe and take in the major
organs and systems of the body. If energy is not flowing freely then
the blockage causes 'dis-ease' in the system, by helping to release
blockages the energy can flow freely and the body and systems can
function in good health. Now, here in the west we are notoriously bad about 'looking after
ourselves properly' – we readily spend lots and lots of money on
ourselves externally. We buy clothes and makeup and pay a fortune on a
good night out and then regard having a massage or reflexology treatment as 'that treat we cannot afford to have'. How wrong do we have this? How back to front are we? The treats we cannot afford are the material things like the clothes
and things – the essentials are those things that bring us back to
balance and good health. I usually only see people once they have hit a state of 'dis-ease'. Truly the best way to look after ourselves is to pay close attention
to what the body and soul really needs and by giving the best attention
to this and by learning to listen to our own internal voice and warning
system we should be able to live far healthier and happier lives.

The Art Of Tai ChiPosted On 2012-10-20 05:28:03
Moving Meditation: The Art Of Tai Chiby Karen Schroeder, MS, RD Breathe in, breathe out. Let your chest rise, now let it fall. Shift your body weight to your left leg and stretch your arms out to the left, now slowly sway your arms and your body weight over to the right. Complementary movements; mental and physical balance; yin and yang. This is the essence of tai chi.Understanding Tai Chi ChuanAccording to Chinese medicine, the universe is run by a single principle, the Tao, which is made up of the yin and the yang which are two opposing, yet complementary principles. For example, the yin includes femaleness, the moon, cold, and matter, while maleness, the sun, heat, and energy are relatively yang."Chi" refers to our energy, vitality, or life force. And "tai chi" is translated as "all encompassing" or "supreme ultimate," because of its embodiment of both the yin and the yang. "Chuan," often used in the name, translates to "fist" or "boxing," and signifies exercise.Peter Wayne, PhD, director of the Tree of Life Tai Chi Center in Somerville, MA, describes tai chi as "moving meditation." Through the slow and careful movements of tai chi, Dr. Wayne explains, "People learn to focus on each motion, and become aware of the processes in their bodies and mind. We strive for simple and peaceful quality of physical movement and mental thought. During special moments, practice may even generate spiritual insights." Achieving And Maintaining Good HealthIn Chinese medicine, pain or sickness is believed to occur when the flow of the chi is blocked, and yin and yang energies are out of balance. When the chi is circulating freely, physical symptoms disappear. The joints are seen as gates that control the flow of chi; the slow, gentle, swaying movements, deep breathing, and mental focus of tai chi are designed to relieve tension, open up these joints, and allow chi to move effortlessly throughout the body.Tai chi is purported to be good for all health concerns. A number of renowned tai chi masters are said to have experienced sickness in the past from which they could find no relief until they began to practice tai chi. Such reports, however, are merely anecdotes, and may not represent actual benefit. The scientific research done thus far has involved small groups of people. But Dr. Wayne notes that these studies are promising and suggest specific benefits. At Emory University, researchers found that elderly people who practiced tai chi regularly were less likely to fall, and less likely to hurt themselves from a fall than a similar group of people given balance training, but no tai chi instruction.Other studies have suggested improvements in flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular fitness, which may bring relief to people recovering from heart surgery or dealing with such conditions as arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, and hypertension. However, none of these studies reach a sufficient level of rigor that can actually prove tai chi is specifically effective. Learning To PracticeTai chi involves virtually no impact and no equipment, and requires only your motivation and perseverance. With the supervision of a qualified instructor, people of any physical condition can begin to practice with little concern for injury. Dr. Wayne suggests starting with a group class. To find a teacher you'll be compatible with, ask members of different classes about their teachers. There is a great variety of styles of tai chi, and an even greater variety of teaching styles. In some traditional classes, there is little verbal communication and the students learn by watching. In other classes, the teacher may speak throughout and often use imagery to describe body movements ("let your spine hang gently like a necklace of pearls") and to guide meditation ("let the energy flow through you like water down a stream").There is no national certification program for tai chi instructors, rather there is an informal hierarchy. Typically, those who call themselves "masters" have extensive experience, however, anyone can adopt this title. Ask potential instructors about their experience and their specific style, and compare sample classes if possible. Balancing Your ChiWhether you have a specific health condition or wish to maintain your current state of health, balancing your yin and yang energies through the practice of tai chi may bring peace and vitality to your mind, your body, and your life.

Understanding Tai Chi Chuan
According to Chinese medicine, the universe is run by a single principle, the Tao, which is made up of the yin and the yang which are two opposing, yet complementary principles. 18 Health Tricks to Teach Your BodyBy: Kate DaileyEating 10 hot dogs in 6 minutes and belching the national anthem may impress your friends, but neither of those feats will do much for your body—at least not much good. Instead, why not train yourself to do something that may actually pay off? We're not talking bench presses and interval training (though those do help). You can teach your body to cure itself from everyday health ailments—side stitches, first-date jitters, even hands that have fallen asleep. Just study this list, and the next time your friends challenge you to an ice cream eating contest, chow down: You know how to thaw a brain freeze—and 17 other tricks that'll make everyone think you're the next David Blaine. But without all that "hold your breath for 17 minutes" mess. Do Them Right: To mazimize your workout, good form is a must. Men's Health Personal Trainer features videos demos that you can download and take with you to the gym. Find out more. Cure a Tickling Throat When you were 9, playing your armpit was a cool trick. Now, as an adult, you can still appreciate a good body-based feat, especially if it serves as a health remedy. Take that tickle in your throat: It's not worth gagging over. Here's a better way to scratch your itch: Scratch your ear. "When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a reflex in the throat that can cause a muscle spasm," says Scott Schaffer, M.D., president of an ear, nose, and throat specialty center in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. "This spasm relieves the tickle.
"Experience Supersonic Hearing If you're stuck chatting up a mumbler at a cocktail party, lean in with your right ear. It's better than your left at following the rapid rhythms of speech, according to researchers at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. If, on the other hand, you're trying to identify that song playing softly in the elevator, turn your left ear toward the sound. The left ear is better at picking up music tones.
Overcome Your Most Primal UrgeNeed to pee? No bathroom nearby? Fantasize about Jessica Simpson. Thinking about sex preoccupies your brain, so you won't feel as much discomfort, says Larry Lipshultz, M.D., chief of male reproductive medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine. For best results, try Simpson's "These Boots Are Made for Walking" video.
Feel No Pain German researchers have discovered that coughing during an injection can lessen the pain of the needle stick. According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, the trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, inhibiting the pain-conducting structures of the spinal cord.
Clear Your Stuffed Nose Forget Sudafed. Here's an easier, quicker, and cheaper remedy to relieve sinus pressure: Alternate thrusting your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then pressing between your eyebrows with one finger. This causes the vomer bone, which runs through the nasal passages to the mouth, to rock back and forth, says Lisa DeStefano, D.O., an assistant professor at the Michigan State University college of osteopathic medicine. The motion loosens congestion; after 20 seconds, you'll feel your sinuses start to drain
.Fight Fire Without Water
Worried those wings will repeat on you tonight? Try this preventive remedy: "Sleep on your left side," says Anthony A. Starpoli, M.D., a New York City gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at New York Medical College. Studies have shown that patients who sleep on their left sides are less likely to suffer from acid reflux. The esophagus and stomach connect at an angle. When you sleep on your right, the stomach is higher than the esophagus, allowing food and stomach acid to slide up your throat. When you're on your left, the stomach is lower than the esophagus, so gravity's in your favor.
Cure Your Toothache Just rub ice on the back of your hand, on the V-shaped webbed area between your thumb and index finger. A Canadian study found that this technique reduces toothache pain by as much as 50 percent compared with using no ice. The nerve pathways at the base of that V stimulate an area of the brain that blocks pain signals from the face and hands
.Make Burns Disappear When you accidentally singe your finger on the stove, clean the skin and apply light pressure with the finger pads of your unmarred hand. Ice will relieve your pain more quickly, Dr. DeStefano says, but since the natual method brings the burned skin back to a normal temperature, the skin is less likely to blister.
Stop the World from Spinning One too many drinks left you dizzy? Ah, luckily there's a remedy. Put your hand on something stable. The part of your ear responsible for balance—the cupula—floats in a fluid of the same density as blood. "As alcohol dilutes blood in the cupula, the cupula becomes less dense and rises," says Dr. Schaffer. This confuses your brain. The tactile input from a stable object gives the brain a second opinion, and you feel more in balance. Because the nerves in the hand are so sensitive, this works better than the conventional foot-on-the-floor wisdom.
Unstitch Your Side If you're like most people, when you run, you exhale as your right foot hits the ground. This puts downward pressure on your liver (which lives on your right side), which then tugs at the diaphragm and creates a side stitch, according to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Men. The fix: Exhale as your left foot strikes the ground.
Stanch Blood with One Finger Pinching your nose and leaning back is a great way to stop a nosebleed—if you don't mind choking on your own O positive. A more civil approach: Put some cotton on your upper gums—just behind that small dent below your nose—and press against it, hard. "Most bleeds come from the front of the septum, the cartilage wall that divides the nose," says Peter Desmarais, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Entabeni Hospital, in Durban, South Africa. "Pressing here helps stop them.
"Make Your Heart Stand Still Trying to quell first-date jitters? Blow on your thumb. The vagus nerve, which governs heart rate, can be controlled through breathing, says Ben Abo, an emergency medical-services specialist at the University of Pittsburgh. It'll get your heart rate back to normal.
Thaw Your Brain Too much Chipwich too fast will freeze the brains of lesser men. As for you, press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much as you can. "Since the nerves in the roof of your mouth get extremely cold, your body thinks your brain is freezing, too," says Abo. "In compensating, it overheats, causing an ice-cream headache." The more pressure you apply to the roof of your mouth, the faster your headache will subside.
Prevent Near-Sightedness Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. "It's usually caused by near-point stress." In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles—like the eyes—into relaxing as well.
Wake the Dead If your hand falls asleep while you're driving or sitting in an odd position, rock your head from side to side. It'll painlessly banish your pins and needles in less than a minute, says Dr. DeStefano. A tingly hand or arm is often the result of compression in the bundle of nerves in your neck; loosening your neck muscles releases the pressure. Compressed nerves lower in the body govern the feet, so don't let your sleeping dogs lie. Stand up and walk around.
Impress Your Friends
Next time you're at a party, try this trick: Have a person hold one arm straight out to the side, palm down, and instruct him to maintain this position. Then place two fingers on his wrist and push down. He'll resist. Now have him put one foot on a surface that's a half inch higher (a few magazines) and repeat. This time his arm will cave like the French. By misaligning his hips, you've offset his spine, says Rachel Cosgrove, C.S.C.S., co-owner of Results Fitness, in Santa Clarita, California. Your brain senses that the spine is vulnerable, so it shuts down the body's ability to resist.
Breathe Underwater If you're dying to retrieve that quarter from the bottom of the pool, take several short breaths first—essentially, hyperventilate. When you're underwater, it's not a lack of oxygen that makes you desperate for a breath; it's the buildup of carbon dioxide, which makes your blood acidic, which signals your brain that somethin' ain't right. "When you hyperventilate, the influx of oxygen lowers blood acidity," says Jonathan Armbruster, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology at Auburn University. "This tricks your brain into thinking it has more oxygen." It'll buy you up to 10 seconds.
Read Minds Your own! "If you're giving a speech the next day, review it before falling asleep," says Candi Heimgartner, an instructor of biological sciences at the University of Idaho. Since most memory consolidation happens during sleep, anything you read right before bed is more likely to be encoded as long-term memory.
